The May long weekend is coming up fast, and many families will be gearing up for their first camping trip of the year! Here’s hoping the weather is nice and the rain holds up so you all enjoy a dry weekend!
As with each year, there is always preparation involved for a successful and enjoyable weekend away; you’ll need to dig out the tent and camping gear, book a campsite, pack your cooking supplies, and pack appropriate clothing and outerwear.
Always Plan Ahead
Camping with your close family or friends is always a memorable time full of lots of laughs and memories, but unfortunately, there are hazards that can occur as well, and it’s important to think and plan accordingly for potential outcomes that aren’t always pleasant. Remember to consider the weather conditions, the possibility of wild animals, illness, accidents, and in most cases, lack of sleep.
Camping Safety Tips
Here are a few safety tips to keep you and your family safe:
- Always bring extra water
- Be prepared for the unknown. Research the weather before you leave and discover what security measures are in place at your camp location. Notify your friends and family on what your plans are and where you’ll be camping
- Verify that your first aid kit is fully stocked
- Get your food packed up in tight, waterproof bags or bins and be sure they’re placed in a cooler that’s insulated
- Be sure that all foods are cooked to the proper temperature
- Get to the know the general area you’re camping in, and be sure you have multiple copies of maps where you are going, and make sure you have at least two maps
- Confirm that your campground does in fact allow fires
- These goes without saying but never ever handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals with litter or accessible and open garbage cans
- Remember to keep lanterns and open flames outside of all tents
- In case of a separation, decide on a central meeting location where everyone can access
- Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless and can lead to illness or potential death, in humans and animals. Never use fuel-burning equipment like gas stoves, heaters, lanterns, and charcoal grills inside a camper, tent, or enclosed shelter.
- To help deter and prevent insect bites, apply insect repellent that has DEET to exposed skin. Any repellents that have at least 20% DEET can keep you protected for many hours.
